Hawthorn, the botanical name Crataegus oxyacantha, grows as a thorny shrub with white and pink flowers and berries. It grows in Europe, West Asia, North America and North Africa. Modern medicinal parts are leaves and flowers, while traditional preparations use fruits. The main active ingredients of hawthorn are flavonoids, including oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC), vitexin, vitexin 4-O-rhamnoside, quercetin and hyperoside. These flavonoids can act as effective antioxidants.
